My internet sabbatical

hi world,

so i a graduated from art school, got a new teaching gig, started teaching tapestry to some lovely people in my life and now I’M BACK to greet you internet people with all my news of art and textiles in Vancouver.

To celebrate spring I participated in the LUCKY SOCIAL at OCHI in Chinatown (just across from Blim!)  My work was installed in a little room on the 2nd floor that had existing fabric panels installed floor to ceiling.  I discharged (bleach) black material, resisted the fabric with Shibori Tie Dye and installed – oh about 20 metres of it in the back wall of the space.  I don’t have images yet, but I will update at a later time, stay tuned.

Thanks to Curatrix Mairin Cooley from www.dropoutvideo.com and The Lions Den for inviting me to be in the show.  And much love to Tanya for all the help with the install and slinging booze to art freaks.

New Work

I’m excited to show my last two pieces from my final senior studio at Emily Carr.   Sorry for the terrible cell phone picts, it was all I had with me on the day!

In only 2 weeks I will be all finished with school.  With this new voice I have developed a way of thinking and can’t wait to share my ideas with the world and engage with larger communities.

bigger & better,

James Little Memorial Dress

In 2009 I was given a bag full of vintage ties from my friend Patrick Ovington.  The ties had belonged to Patricks grandfather, James Little.  I asked if I could make them into something new as a memorial to his grandfather.

2 weeks ago Patrick modelled the dress walking the streets of Mount Pleasant in performance.

Lions Den Show – June 2, 2011

It was a pleasure working on the installation at Lions Den with Mairin, Soledad and Emily.

We created a space for Music Waste performers that had my DYE SUBLIMATION printed speakers in the room.

I am eager to try more of this type of printing, the heat transfer process only works on poly fabrics though.

Synthetic fabric was a perfect fit for the electronic processes and ambiance in the gallery.

The image that we printed on the fabric came from video screen shot of Soledad’s oscillator playing static patterns on a television set

Thanks to the HIVE for helping me with the  printing!

I wove two new pieces for the show,  stretched them over speaker covers, and knit black conduit for the wiring.  The industrial sounds played through the speakers which were originally recorded in Mono so the space between became quite sculptural.  Again, my work lives in the stairwell…I really love this space for my work.  With audio now I feel a darker archway into the gallery is created, those who are repulsed will not enter and those who become curious will brave the entrance and be rewarded.  I suppose taste is involved, with aesthetics it always is.

The audio is recorded from me weaving at an industrial Jacquard loom which I distorted and layered.

The piece with the speakers is titled INDUSTRIAL WEAVING FOR MUSIC,

a name that came up when I was first fiddling with audio as  pattern with my old friend Patrick.

Thanks to my Dad, Peter Kilgour who I recorded the track with in the Fraser Valley.

ENJOY!
